Pochette officielle du remix — Geffen / Interscope Records
Two of American pop’s most distinctive voices have finally joined forces in the studio. Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan unveiled a remix of “expectations,” from the album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, on Thursday, October 15, backed by a music video featuring an unexpected guest: former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne.
A first-time team-up between two stars of the same generation
For Chappell Roan, this feature is a first: the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer had never lent her voice to another artist’s track since her commercial breakthrough. The choice of “expectations” is no accident. On the original version, Olivia Rodrigo lists, verse after verse, every quality she will no longer put up with in a partner. On the remix, Chappell Roan adds a second verse applying the same standards, this time to a woman. Both singers said they laughed constantly in the studio, insisting that none of the events described in the new verse actually happened to either of them.
The remix was produced by Dan Nigro, Olivia Rodrigo’s longtime collaborator, who is also credited on several Chappell Roan tracks. That shared studio connection is partly what brought the two artists together, after years of being framed by the American press as rivals rather than potential collaborators.

A video built like a retro game show
The video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, borrows the look of 1970s American game shows. Both singers play several contestants competing on a fictional program called “The Big Expectations Show,” while David Byrne plays the host, a character named Johnny Johnson. The tone is deliberately kitsch, all cardboard sets and garish lighting, a sharp departure from Olivia Rodrigo’s usually darker visual style.
Posted to Olivia Rodrigo’s official channel, the video passed four million views in under twenty-four hours, an unusually fast start for a video that wasn’t backed by a traditional promotional rollout. The track also came out in limited physical formats — 7-inch vinyl, CD and cassette — sold through both artists’ own stores.
The David Byrne cameo is more than just a surprise walk-on. As a founding member of Talking Heads and a longtime fixture of eccentric stage and video concepts, his presence lends an almost legacy-act stamp of approval to a video built for an audience decades younger than his own. The casting choice drove plenty of conversation online right after release, with some younger viewers discovering who he was for the first time.

Two careers that have long run in parallel
On paper, the pairing was always going to generate buzz. Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan each represent a different side of pop music built for a young, social-media-native audience: one built her career on breakup ballads and vitriolic kiss-offs, the other on a more theatrical, openly queer persona carried through to her stage outfits. Fans have drawn comparisons between the two for years, without an official collaboration ever materializing.
“expectations,” in its original form, had already racked up more than 179 million Spotify streams before the remix dropped, proof the song had found an audience well beyond the album’s original release window. Chappell Roan’s arrival gives it a second life, and puts Olivia Rodrigo’s album back in the conversation months after it first came out.
Neither artist has mentioned a joint tour date or a second shared track so far. But the remix’s reception, both critical and public, suggests this feature won’t remain an isolated gesture.
It also fits a broader pattern this year of major pop acts reviving older singles through high-profile guest verses rather than rushing out entirely new material. For an album that already did the commercial heavy lifting earlier in the year, a remix costs little to produce and gives streaming platforms, radio and playlist editors a fresh reason to push the song back into rotation — a low-risk, high-return move that several of Olivia Rodrigo’s peers have leaned on this cycle as well.
