Pochette officielle du single « Housewife » — RCA Records

It took Tate McRae just one week to turn “Housewife” into a global event. The Canadian singer’s new single landed on October 16, backed by a video shot on the French Riviera, and immediately topped both the Billboard Global 200 and the Global Excl. U.S. chart, racking up 55.9 million streams and several thousand downloads in its first tracking week.

A record-setting launch

On the U.S. market, “Housewife” only reaches No. 2 on the Hot 100, the chart that blends radio airplay with streaming, whereas the Global 200, which measures listening worldwide, puts McRae in first place. On Spotify, the track opened atop the Daily Global chart with 5.671 million streams on day one, before confirming the top spot on the Weekly Global chart with 39.1 million streams over its first full tracking week (Oct. 16-22). On TikTok, the song turned into one of the most-used sounds of the autumn within days, further fuelling its climb up the streaming charts.

A housewife fantasy, shot in France

In the video, Tate McRae plays out an empowered, self-written version of the housewife fantasy: she cruises the French Riviera on a yacht, dances alone in the living room of a mansion, then joins a love interest. The singer has said the song is about “a woman who can’t be contained,” with lyrics built around financial independence and the freedom to choose her own life rather than a role assigned to her. A few days after release, she also delivered a live rendition of the track at the 2026 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, later issued as its own single.

The first taste of album number four

“Housewife” is billed as the lead single from Tate McRae’s fourth studio album, whose title and release date remain under wraps for now. The Calgary-born singer had already stacked up global hits in recent years, and this latest chart-topper confirms her standing as one of pop’s safest bets as she opens a new chapter in her career.

Who is Tate McRae?

At 22, Tate McRae is no newcomer. Trained as a dancer before turning to music, the Canadian has spent the past few years establishing herself as one of the rare artists of her generation able to string together global hits, from “greedy” to “she’s all i wanna be”, without ever quite leaving the top of the charts. Her stage presence, shaped by her dance background, has also made her a regular at pop’s biggest showcases, from awards shows to the most-watched fashion broadcasts on television. “Housewife” lands at a moment when her broad fan base, built largely on TikTok, is primed to follow every new release in real time.

Much of the track’s instant success comes from that digital echo chamber: within days, tens of thousands of videos had picked up the song’s most danceable hook, a trend that only grew after her live performance. Music writers have also pointed to the pop-country inflections the song flirts with in places, a subtle but notable shift for an artist who had previously leaned more toward pop-urban and dance production. It all feeds curiosity about the fourth album to come, for which this first single now serves as a calling card.

For now, McRae and her label have kept quiet on timing for the follow-up record, letting “Housewife” run its course on charts and on TikTok instead. Given how quickly the single moved from release to global No. 1, whatever she unveils next is likely to arrive with an audience already primed and waiting.
